Casting call

The producers of a feature-length film, “The Sunset Sky,” to be shot this month in Kansas are holding an open casting call from Sunday through Tuesday for actors and working to hire production crew members. Several scenes will be shot Aug. 18-25 on location within a 50-mile radius of Wichita.

The producers are casting four roles with speaking parts. They also need production crew interns to assist with the filming. Film set experience is required and applicants must have a valid driver’s license. Two of the positions will be paid: sound mixing and hair and makeup. Other intern positions are unpaid: grip and electric, camera assistant familiar with the Panasonic HVX200, production design/set dressing, hair and makeup.

Meteor show

The “Night Sky Program” to see the Perseids meteor showers will be held from 9 to 11 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve at Strong City. A bus will transport participants to the back country of the preserve, with reservations required for a seat on the bus. To reserve a seat, call (620) 273-8494. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for those 5-18 years. If they wish, participants can bring insect repellent, flashlights and lawn chairs. Telescopes will be available. There are no restroom facilities. In case of inclement or cloudy weather, the program will be canceled. No alcohol allowed.

Museum talk

Bill Ballard, president of the Kansas Council of Genealogical Societies, will present “Genealogy: A Search for a Personal History,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the “Night at the Museum” at the Lyon County Museum, 118 E. Sixth Ave. The program is free and open to the public.

Concert

On Aug. 15, Elexa & the Hitchhikers and the Old Country Death Band will play, starting at 8 p.m., Aug. 15 at Beer:30.

State Fair

The Kansas State Fair at Hutchinson, Sept. 5-14, will feature at the Sprint Grandstand, Styx with Kansas, Sept. 5; Gary Allan with Blake Shelton, Sept. 6; Poison, Sept. 7; Demolition Derby, Sept. 8; Jeremy Camp, Sept. 9; Freestyle MX, Sept. 10; Puddle of Mudd, Sept. 11; Alice Cooper, Sept. 12; Joe Nichols with Jason Michael Carroll, Sept. 13; Corbin Blue, Sept. 14. Lutter the Chainsaw Woodcarver, bulls and broncs, Oscar the Robot; butter sculpture, lawn mower races.
