Feds: couple embezzled $2 Million

Thursday, August 7, 2008

A Topeka couple is accused of embezzling more than $2 million from an Emporia manufacturer.

James W. Foremsky, 61, and Susan A. Foremsky, 56, were indicted Wednesday in U.S. District Court on one count of conspiracy to commit crimes including bank fraud, wire fraud and money laundering.

According to information from the U.S. Attorney’s office, James Foremsky was chief financial officer of Vektek from June 1995 to Nov. 8, 2007, and had control over all of the company’s finances, including bank accounts.

Between 2002 and 2007, the indictment says, he “unlawfully withdrew funds from the company’s accounts in order to maintain a lavish lifestyle for himself and his family including expensive vacations, bar tabs, meals, new vehicles, mortgage payments and a hobby maintaining and showing jumping horses.

Prosecutors allege that Foremsky “altered internal checkbook spreadsheets and moved funds between accounts in an attempt to cover up the thefts.” Authorities are asking for forfeiture of $2,646,554 in proceeds from the alleged crime.

If convicted, the Foremskys face a maximum penalty of 30 years in federal prison and a fine up to $1 million. The Federal Bureau of Investigation worked on the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard Hathaway is prosecuting.

What greedy, rotten low down people! The dregs of humanity.

Then you read the other story in today's paper about the Baysingers, a couple with plenty of oil income, who have come to Emporia all the way from Laramie, Wyoming just to bid on 4-H animals in order to allow the kids to make a little profit. What beauty, what class, what a perfect couple. God bless them.

I'd drive all the way from Topeka, too, if I worked for a company blind enough to miss $2 million. HELLO! Vektek doesn't seem to be that large of a company. I think I'd miss $2 million if that were my company (before 12 years had passed). And if my memory serves me correctly, didn't they have an employee that embezzled money from them before?

According to the article, the money was taken over a period of five years (2002 to 2007), not twelve--not that 5 years is a short period. It's hard to believe that an auditor worth a dang could miss this kind of book "cooking" for five years! What a sleazy couple.

I hope that VekTek can recover the money taken from them, but it's probably a slim chance that will happen.

Thanks to "create" for mentioning a positive story in the news, in sharp contrast to this one.
