‘Student’ scam
MANHATTAN — The Kansas State University theater program is asking people to call the Riley County Police Department if they are contacted about buying magazines from individuals posing as K-State theater students.
“We have received several calls from people who said they were approached at their homes by individuals posing as theater students. K-State Theater does not solicit funds door-to-door, nor do we ask for cash or for checks made out to individuals,” said Marci Maullar, managing director of K-State Theater.
Maullar said the theater program has had calls about the magazine sales from people in Emporia, Manhattan, McPherson and Lawrence, who said they were told the funds raised would support a trip to London or would be used to support the troops.
Mauller said anyone asked to buy magazines from individuals claiming to be K-State theater students should contact the Riley County Police Department at (785) 537-2112.
Phill Kline loses
TOPEKA — Phill Kline gained national attention and the loyalty of many abortion foes by investigating clinics, but his reputation will cost him his job as the district attorney in Kansas’ most populous county.
Kline lost the Republican primary Tuesday in Johnson County to Steve Howe, a former assistant district attorney. Howe won 60 percent of the vote and will face Democrat Rick Guinn, another former assistant DA who is now working in the attorney general’s office.
Howe’s main pitch to voters was that the district attorney’s office needs a professional prosecutor, not a politician.
