City budget meeting
The Emporia City Commission will hold a public-comment session on the 2009 budget at 7 p.m. today in the Sacred Heart Parish Hall in the 100 block of Cottonwood Street.
The commissioners will then take up the budget at their regular meeting at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Municipal Building.
School budget workshop
The school district budget workshop will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Mary Herbert Education Center, 1700 W. Seventh Ave. Assistant Superintendent for Business Robert Scheib and Superintendent John Heim will review the proposed budget and answer questions from the audience.
The information session will be followed by a formal budget hearing at 7 p.m. with the Emporia Board of Education. The board will consider the budget for approval at its Aug. 13 meeting.
Copies of the budget will be available at the workshop. Copies also are available at the Board of Education Office, 501 Merchant St. A summary also can be found on the district Web site at www.usd253.org.

Time-traveling comics
Readers of fine print will discover that the comics page running today on Page 14 actually prints the Monday’s comics, as well as today’s horoscope. That’s because Monday’s paper accidentally included the comics and horoscopes that should have run today.
