Primary election
Polls will open at 7 a.m. Tuesday in Lyon County for the 2008 primary election. County voters will decided whether the county may impose a 1-percent sales tax to reduce property taxes. Polls will close at 7 p.m.

There is an error in that list, according to Lyon County Clerk Karen Hartenbower. Precinct 4 will vote at 104 E. Sixth Ave.
Senior Spelling bee
Everyone 50 and older is eligible to compete in the 2nd Annual Senior Spelling Bee, planned for 9:30 a.m., Aug. 23, at HIS Place, 807 Constitution St.
Entrants will compete in two age categories, 50 to 75 and 76 to 105 years of age. Winners will represent Lyon County in the Kansas Senior Spelling Bee in Salina on Oct. 3.
Entry forms are available at the Emporia Senior Center, the Lyon County Department of Aging, senior living residences, or by calling Kathy, 342-1853, or Norma, 342-9056. No entry fee will be charged.
The Senior Spelling Bee, organized by American Association of Retired Persons volunteers, originated 12 years ago in Cheyenne, Wyo.
Spectators are encouraged to attend the local contest, according to a news release.
