The outlook for a big turnout in Tuesday’s primary election is not good. Advance voting has not been strong.
That is a pity, because there is an important issue to be decided. The outcome of the question of the 1-percent sales tax will affect the finances of Lyon County and every community in it. The question is too important to be left up to a majority of a minority of the county’s voters.
Whether you support the tax proposal or oppose it, your voice should be heard at the polls. If you think government should listen to you, it is your responsibility to speak up, and voting is the ultimate form of political speech.

$86,500 dollar's worth of lawn mowers for the golf course, airport and auditorium? That doesn't include a $6,000 greens roller. It's way past time to privatize the golf course. Why can't the airport and golf course share? Time for a little xeriscaping...

I am wondering if there are more now than ever, those who have just given up in trying to make a difference in this county and city. So many have valid opinions and ideas that continue to get over looked and over-rided. Those in the hot seats do as they please no matter what disasters that usually follows the outcomes.
I know I am fed up and disgusted. Many of us will vote and only hope that others find there way to the polls.
Unfortunately, if you dont vote your choice, how can you complain???

hottopics-I don't know how long you have been voting and expressing you views on issues of the unnecessary spending the County and City is doing and has been doing, but I can tell you that I have been attending open City and County Commission meetings and voting on these issues for 45 years and am very frustrated and disillusioned about the open meeting and voting process.
For example when the vote for the new court house was put to the people, I happened to mention my displeasure with the idea to a sitting county commissioner at the time and was told by the commissioner that it didn't matter wheather the new court house was voted down or not, it would be built because a certain district court judge wanted it, now something like that absolutely destroyed my faith in City and County government and the power of the vote, however I still voice my opinions and vote on important issues, hoping that one day someone will listen and my vote will count for something.

We must trim the fat...no question about it. BUT what about collecting tax dollars from those businesses that haven't filed the sales tax dollars they have collected. If they don't file, put them in jail. Several of these businesses are in Emporia.

Filing, TheWatcher, does not appear to be the issue since the amount of taxes owed has been determined. The issue is payment of the taxes.

mythoughts- not tryin' to get to wild about this,so I'll just figure this for folks that think the grass is all the same. The airport and golf course are completely different when it comes to turf.A brush hog (maybe 2)and a Heckendorn will do 99.9% of the airport. It takes an 8-10 ft reel gang in proper shape to work the fairways. These reels must be completely rebuilt each winter, used daily, and maintained daily. For the rough 1 or 2 mowers with 6ft decks might get them by.The mowers for for tees and greens differ, tees mowers are set for about 5/32" cutting height. A single nick in one of the blades will put stripes in the surface-there could be 21-27 blades total on each mower.Tees mowers are a bit less precise. The various types of grass for a golf course are often kept on the verge of death by the crew there to get the correct surface for play.Setting up the equipment is an art- keeping the course playable takes a fanatic to run the course, and his skills include a bit of voodoo. Didn't mean to off about the grass!- just lettin' people know there's a lot to it.It costs a lot to have an airport and golf course. The people there aren't the kid down the street that knocks down your lawn once a week. You also need more than a cashier at the convenience store to check out and fuel your plane(can't leave out the airport folks).Part of the cost of runnin' a city!
