In Tuesday’s election, some Gazette readers will be asked to nominate a Republican candidate for the 76th District seat in the Kansas House. The district includes part of east Emporia, eastern Lyon County, part of Greenwood County and almost all of Coffey County.
To tell the truth, it doesn’t seem to be much of a choice. The candidates are Peggy Mast, the incumbent, and Tony Trimble, a new face in politics from Burlington.
It would be hard to slip a sheet of tissue paper between their political views. Both are conservatives and they espouse similar views on the issues of the state. The primary difference is that Trimble says he could do better at the job Mast has been doing for 12 years.
That may be so, but we have yet to see any proof.
Mast, on the other hand, is a known quantity. Constituents who know her — and there are many — know her to be honest, hard-working and concerned with the problems of Kansas and its people.
Given the choice between the original and “me, too,” The Gazette chooses the original.
Peggy Mast deserves the nomination of her party in Tuesday’s election.
