Pats on the Back

Friday, August 1, 2008

Each Friday, The Gazette salutes those who make Emporia and the surrounding area a better place to live and work. Give these folks a pat on the back ...

The Lyon County Clerk and the League of Women Voters, who have teamed up this year to provide voter-registration services at the county’s nursing homes.

• All of the volunteers who helped with Saturday’s Shrine Bowl in Emporia. From the run in the morning to the cliffhanger ending of the football game, it was a great day in Emporia.

• Collene Stucky of the Center for Early Childhood Education at Emporia State University. She has found a timely theme or her class of school-age children this summer, involving them in their own version of the Olympics. The children have signed an Olympic oath and are participating on one event a day.

• Race-car driver Clint Bowyer, who has established a $4,000 annual scholarship in automotive technology at Flint Hills Technical College. The renewable scholarship is for a post-secondary student studying toward an associate’s degree in the program. Bowyer’s 79 Fund, administered by the Emporia Community Foundation, is also footing the bill for free swimming at Jones Aquatic Center for children through the end of the season, Aug. 10.

• The North Lyon County Junior Wildcats, the Mid America Youth Basketball team that won first place in a tournament at Manhattan last weekend.

• The volunteers who showed up Wednesday night at Peter Pan Park to follow up on the playground project. The volunteers used leftover lumber from the playground project to build benches for the park.

• SOS and its CASA program, which received $78,000 in state grants to provide crime-victim services.

• Tracey Graham, the winner of the salsa-making contest at the Emporia Farmers Market.

• Former ESU baseball players Ty Reese and Mark McBratney, who have signed contracts with the Kansas City T-Bones.

• Eight-year-old Emporia golfer Collin Hopkins, who took second place in the 11-and-under division of the First Tee Open Junior Gold Championship in Salina.

• Cory Anderson, Olin Karr and Chris Klinger, who placed first, second and third, respectively, in the “Emporia’s Got Talent” talent show at the Brown Bag lunch at the Emporia Public Library Wednesday.

What about the kids that went to Colorado last week to play baseball because they won the State title.

acricket,

The most difficult part about compiling Pats on the Back is accidentally leaving people out.

You're certainly correct that the 10U Cal Ripken team from Emporia deserves props for winning state and representing Kansas at Regionals.

Also, props to the 14U Babe Ruth team from Emporia, which won District and headed to State in Hillsboro.

And the Emporia Blues baseball team that made it to State in Pratt.
