Dangerous heat
The National Weather Service has declared a heat advisory for most of eastern Kansas, including Emporia, from 1 p.m. today through 8 p.m. Monday. Daytime temperatures are expected to range from 99 to 102 degrees, with heat index readings as high as 108.
The Weather Service advisory includes a warning against strenuous outdoor activity and recommends wearing light, loose clothing, and hats and sunscreen for sun protection.
School budget workshop
Residents in the Emporia school district will have an opportunity to hear a review of the district’s proposed budget and to ask questions during the annual budget workshop at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Mary Herbert Education Center, 1700 W. Seventh Ave.
Assistant Superintendent for Business Rob Scheib and Superintendent John Heim will talk about the budget and answer questions from the audience.
The workshop will be followed by a formal budget hearing at 7 p.m. with the board of education. The board will consider the budget for approval at the Aug. 13 meeting, according to Nancy Horst, community relations director for the district.
Copies of the budget will be available at the workshop and also may be picked up at the board office, 501 Merchant St. A summary can be found on the district’s Web site at www.usd253.org.
