Q Why can’t the Lyon County Free Fair bring in big-name entertainment like other county fairs do?
A “Because we can’t afford them,” said Fair Board Secretary Shelia Price. “They’re so expensive.”
Price said that the fair board in years past had brought in stars such as Johnny Cash, long after he was an established entertainer, and Reba McEntire before she became a major star.
“Our concerts have been $5 and we haven’t even filled the stands,” Price said.
Johnny Cash’s appearance brought in only a small number of spectators.
“But they went to Ottawa for the next day and had two sold-out shows,” she said.
“We go in the hole so much and to get anybody, it’s outrageous. It’s $10,000, $15,000, $20,000” for entertainers who are not well-known.

Why have "big name" entertainment at all? Why not put your heads together and try to create some other kind of snazzy big fat deal without depending on some "big name" draw? Be original!
Yes, we do have a great fair.

There are people in the area who could provide wonderful entertainment. Frankly, I can go hear big name entertainment elsewhere. At the county fair we get to see the work of our local folks from animals to food to flowers to arts. I'd like to hear the music of locals as well. Let's be proud of what we have here.

how about an event like the library does with their brown bag Wednesday? An Emporia Idol type of show? as
previously noted---showcase local talent.
