Book series
The next book in the Emporia Public Library 2008 Book Discussion Series will be “Water for Elephants” by Sara Gruen. The group meets at 7 p.m. Aug. 6 in the large meeting room of the library. Author reading
The Gridley Branch of Coffey County Library invites the public to attend a book reading by children’s author Suzanne Ritchal of Oklahoma City, Okla., at 1 p.m. Aug. 5. Ritchal’s book is “Sir Chicken” and is based on a true story of her uncle’s childhood. The story was originally written for Ritchal’s brother-in-law after he dreamed that she would become a children’s writer. She is working on several other stories, including picture books and early chapter books. She is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. Copies of her book will be available at the reading. She is married to Anthony Ritchal, the son of former Waverly graduate Donna Gifford Ritchal and grandson of Keith and Zelda Gifford of Waverly.
On stage in Branson
This is the second year for dancers from Sherry’s Dance Workshop to perform an opening act for shows in Branson. On Aug. 8, they will be opening for “50s at the Hop” and Aug. 9, they will open for “The Haygoods Show.” The girls have met and worked with professional entertainers and stage crew and have been “putting in a lot of hours and working very hard this summer to perfect their routines!” according to Sherry Davidson, owner of the dance workshop.
Symphony auditions
Auditions for the 2008-2009 Topeka Symphony Youth Ensembles will be on Aug. 23, 2008, at Washburn University. The three youth ensembles are Debut Orchestra, Youth Philharmonic and Youth Orchestra. Rehearsals start Sept. 3. All rehearsals are on Tuesdays with concerts on Nov. 16, 2008 and March 8, 2009. Any musician 21 years of age and younger may audition. To be a member, a student must also play in his or her school orchestra or band, if such an organization exists.
There is a non-refundable $10 audition fee. Once accepted into one of the ensembles, there is a non-refundable tuition fee of $75 each student each year, which includes music charges and rental. Tuition assistance is available for those families with a need.
