The Emporia High softball team suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Shawnee Heights on Tuesday night in Topeka, falling 11-3 in Game One before dropping the nightcap, 11-0.
In the first game, after EHS scored once in its half of the first, Heights’ Jordan Bigham answered with a three-run home run in the opening frame to take a 3-1 lead, but then Emporia starter Cassandra Huth got into a rhythm in the circle.
Over the next three frames, Huth held Heights scoreless with back-to-back-to-back 1-2-3 innings.
Then, in the fifth, after Emporia again was held scoreless, Heights finally broke loose, knocking Huth around for five runs on six hits and a walk.
“We were moving right along in the first game, and I was feeling good about our chances,” EHS coach Ray Owens said. “Then the wheels just fell off. I don’t know what happened.”
EHS answered with a pair of runs in the sixth, but Heights came right back with a three-run inning to hold off any thought of an EHS rally.
Emporia knocked out nine hits in Game One, led by a double from Hilary Heinrichs.
“We hit some good shots and were making some good contact,” Owens said. “We just didn’t put enough hits together to score more runs.”
In Game Two, Heights ended the game early thanks to a five-run second inning in which the Lady Thunderbirds knocked out two home runs.
“In the second game, I don’t think we recovered from the first game,” Owens said. “One of these days, something’s got to go their way.”
Emporia High (0-14) is back in action tonight with a makeup doubleheader at Manhattan.
