The Emporia High girls soccer team’s hopes of a Centennial League title suffered a blow on Tuesday night as the Lady Spartans lost 2-0 to Washburn Rural in Topeka.
Rural scored single goals in each half, with the last goal coming in the final minute with about 40 seconds left.
EHS, meanwhile, never could cash in with a goal of its own, as the Lady Spartans missed all six of their shots on goal.
“The chances we had to score weren’t numerous ... but we didn’t capitalize on the opportunities that we had,” EHS coach John Decker said. “Rural just plays a very high-pressure and high-intensity game.”
Rural outshot Emporia, 15-7.
With the loss, the Lady Spartans (7-5-1) fell 1 1/2 games out of first place in the Centennial League with just two league games remaining.
“We’ll need a lot of help this last week and a half,” Decker said, “but all we can do is go out and win our last two league games.”
