Logjam meeting set

Alternatives to remedy the logjam on the Neosho River near Jacob’s Creek Landing will be presented for the public’s consideration and comment at 6:30 p.m. May 14 at the Anderson Building of the Lyon County Fairgrounds. The meeting is free and open to the public.

The alternatives were developed by the Watershed Institute of Topeka and took into account the previous studies and public input at a January meeting. Development of the alternatives is part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ feasibility study to address sedimentation and related water quality issues affecting John Redmond Reservoir and Watershed.

Governor rejects

TOPEKA — Gov. Kathleen Sebelius has rejected a proposal to build two coal-fired plants in southwest Kansas.

That’s the word from legislative leaders after meeting with her this morning. Those leaders now expect an attempt to override Sebelius’ veto of a bill allowing the plants. They had offered a new proposal as a compromise but say Sebelius told them there was nothing new in it.

Sebelius held a news conference this morning to discuss her veto.

Sunflower Electric Power Corp. wants to build the plants in Finney County. But the project has been blocked by the Sebelius administration over the plant’s potential carbon-dioxide emissions.

The latest proposal from legislators would still allow the two plants but they would be 14 percent smaller than Sunflower had proposed.
