HAVE YOU EVER wished that you could say “Thank you” to someone who has performed a service to our community? At SOS we have that opportunity during National Volunteer Week, April 27 through May 4.
The purpose of National Volunteer Week is to recognize outstanding volunteers around the country.Volunteers are one of our country’s most important assets. National Volunteer Week began in 1974 when President Nixon signed an executive order establishing the week as an annual celebration of volunteering. Since then, every U.S. President has signed a proclamation promoting National Volunteer Week.
No task is too big or small for SOS volunteer advocates. Trained volunteers help in countless ways, such as becoming a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate), answering the 24-hour helpline, providing support to victims, advocating for children, assisting with special events and helping with office work. It isn’t always easy, but these individuals are making a great impact in our community.
Since 1976 SOS has served child and adult victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, abuse and neglect in our community. SOS provides services in Chase, Coffey, Greenwood, Lyon, Morris, and Osage counties. If you would like to learn more about volunteering, contact Cathy Knapp at 342-7943 or Dena Russell at 343-2744 for CASA opportunities.
During the week of April 27 through May 4, take a moment to recognize the volunteers who make our community a better place.
