4-H member from Reading attends D.C. meeting

Wednesday, April 30, 2008

It was a busy week recently for the Kansas delegation that attended the national 4-H conference in Washington, D.C.

Michele Koenig, Lyon County extension agent, said more than 350 youth and adults from around the United States gathered in Washington to share ideas and form recommendations to guide the future of national 4-H youth-development programs.

David Hanks, a member of the Reading 4-H Club in Lyon County and a senior at Northern Heights High School, attended the conference earlier this month. Hanks is the son of Mike and Donna Hanks of Reading.

This year’s theme for the national conference was “Green Aid: Acquire, Inform, Deliver.” Delegates focused on the question, “As society becomes more environmentally conscious, how can the 4-H Youth Development Program aid in enhancing socially significant and relevant programming to increase environmental awareness of our clubs, our communities our country and our world?”

A set of recommendations were presented on behalf of the delegates by National 4-H Director Cathann Kress, who presented the recommendations to Agriculture Secretary Ed Schaffer. These include:

- Strive for a more coherent national program.

- Develop national opportunities to engage older members and keep them involved in 4-H.

- Encourage 4-H to make greater use of communication to engage members with one another and share curricular materials and program ideas.

- At all levels of 4-H, do a better job of telling the story of 4-H through national promotions and publicity.

- Invest and allocate funds to develop new product ideas, deliver the latest technologies to youth at the local level and increase state-level funding critical to the program’s health.
