Bright and early Wednesday morning, the Peter Pan Playground Project will get down to business. At 8 a.m., the first shift of volunteers will begin constructing a fancy new playground in Emporia’s beautiful old park. For the next five days, the workers will be busy until dark, building the playground that has been years in the planning.
The playground project is one of the largest volunteers efforts ever undertaken in Emporia. It could stand to be a little larger.
Organizer Robin Nelson at the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce said skilled and unskilled volunteers are still needed for the first and second shifts on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The first shift runs from 8 a.m. to noon, the second shift from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. The third shift runs after most people are off work for the day, from 5 p.m. until dark. There are a lot of volunteers for that shift.
Nelson said that day care will be available so parents with children can volunteer without the expense of a sitter. To make day-care arrangements, call Denise Dorcey at 794-1622 or e-mail ddorcey@usd253.org.
The playground is certainly a good cause and it doesn’t require a long-term commitment. By next week, Emporia should have a bright, new safe playground that will serve its children — particularly the children of south Emporia — for years to come.
Can you volunteer for a shift or two?
If you can, call Dorcey today.
