The area where U.S. Highway 50 connects to Overlander Road will be closed beginning Wednesday morning for construction work, Tony Menke of the Kansas Department of Transportation said.
Menke said the south half of Highway 50 would be repaved.
“We’ve got everything else done,” he said. “We need to come in there and need to tear out that section of pavement that we’ve left in there, so we have a connection, tear it out and treat the subgrade and put paving down, so we can get the south half of Highway 50 done.”
He said a detour would run down Graphic Arts Road to Sixth Avenue and across the south end of Overlander Road.
The road will be closed Wednesday beginning at about 9 a.m. Construction is anticipated to take about three weeks, Menke said. He said completion of the entire turnpike construction project was weather-dependent, but he hoped to have the turnpike “substantially open to traffic” in early 2009.
