Chuck Griffin will auction off everything but the kitchen sink at the annual Sacred Heart Bid & Bite Auction to benefit Sacred Heart School. A steak dinner catered by Bruff’s Bar and Grill will precede the event, planned on Saturday at the Parish Hall. The theme this year is “Hollywood Nights.”
Among the line-up of items are: numerous antiques, including furniture and dishes or glassware; a power parachute plane ride; tickets to sports events, theaters, museums and zoos; artwork, including paintings, blown glass and hand-forged steel; fitness packages; a John Deere portable power washer; a one-year family membership to the Nelson-Atkins Museum, tickets to the Symphony in the Flint Hills and the Country Stampede; golf packages and supplies; a Christmas cocktail party; several ethnic meals; a three-night stay in Las Vegas; a private wine-tasting tour for 20; a last will and testament from a local attorney; and a host of other items.
Sacred Heart students also have contributed to the auction. The pre-school donated a garden basket with supplies, the kindergarten class painted old-fashioned wooden school desks to sell, first- and second-graders have contributed a package including an electric grill with an apron, third- and fourth-graders assembled a girl’s basket and a boy’s basket, and fifth- and sixth-graders made a quilt.
“We’ve got some really good items,” said Mandy McManaman. “I’m really impressed.”
McManaman and Shari Beatty are co-chairpersons for the event.
Doors to the silent auction will open at 5 p.m. The dinner — steak, baked potato, green beans, rolls and dessert — costs $20 and will begin at 5:45 p.m. Music after the dinner will be provided by Eric Martin, guitar teacher at Flint Hills Music and member of several bands, until the auction starts at 8:30 p.m.
There is no admission charge to attend the auction. Tickets for the dinner may be purchased at the school, Guion’s Showcase Furniture and Muckenthaler’s Inc.
The steak will be served as a buffet, with one trip through per ticket.
A bar will be open during the evening, with beverages served at no set fee, McManaman said. Donations will be accepted for the bar beverages.
Because alcohol will be available, no one under 21 years of age will be admitted to the event, she said. Babysitters are available through the Sacred Heart Youth Group. For more information, call Cindy Rousch at the church office, 342-1061.
Raffle tickets for a week’s lodging in the Bosiljevac condominium in Los Cabos, Mexico, are available at a suggested price of $1 each or six for $ 5. Information may be had by calling the school office, 343-7394.
Money raised from the auction and auxiliary activities will be used to help with tuition assistance and daily operations of the school, which serves children preschool through grade six. It is one of two annual fundraising events held by the school each year; the other is a taco supper for which parents and church members spend days in advance, cooking and preparing for the event.
“This is a little bit easier on the parents,” McManaman said. “It’s more fun for the parents. We get to sit and visit with the people and it’s not as hard work as the Mexican supper.”
