Community foundation announces spring grants

Five charitable organizations have been chosen to receive a total of almost $9,000 from the spring distribution of Emporia Community Foundation funds. ECF also announced creation of three new funds, including one begun by NASCAR race driver, Emporian Clint Bowyer.

Grants ranging from $1,000 to $3,475 were given to the Mental Health Center of East-Central kansas, ECKAN, the Greenwood County Health Department, the All Veterans’ Tribute for Braille flags, and Council Grove’s Building Blocks Community Child Care Center.

The EFC board of trustees this month approved the grants, which were recommended by its grant committee. The committee chose the five winners from 15 organizations that applied, according to a news release from spokesman, Ken Calhoun.

ECF President Ken Buchele said that most of the projects would not have been possible without the grant money.

“This was a major consideration in making our selections,” Buchele said. “Fortunately, we have had the resources to fund these types of charitable grants in the spring and fall for several years, and we hope to be able to continue doing so.”

The grants generally do not exceed $4,000, and are awarded to one-time projects rather than supporting ongoing projects.

Three new funds — The Emporia City Band, the Building Futures, and the “79 Fund” — also were accepted into the foundation.

The “79 Fund” has been created for Clint Bowyer to help children in Emporia, the news release stated.

“Clint has a wonderful desire to help the community and this fund will be a great start in that effort,” said Rick Tidwell, Foundation trustee.

the all Veterans tribute for braille flags? What is the "All Veterans Tribute" going to do with braille flags? would it been better spent on repainting the helicopter or landscaping the north side of the memorial by planting some fast growing trees, how about the city condemning the land north and put a parking lot there for people to park, Or place a military item on the grounds to support the Iraq veterans, JMO

justa...it is not an either/or. Your good suggestions will be accomplished when other funds donated by people like you and I are secured
