SOS run postponed until October

The annual Light of Hope 5K Run/Walk to benefit SOS programs has been rescheduled for the fall to coincide with Domestic Violence Month, according to Lori Moore, community relations director for SOS.

The event, which had been scheduled for May 3, will take place on Saturday, Oct. 4, with additional special events being planned for cities within SOS’s six-county area.

“We’ve got some really good opportunities to get all six counties involved and use it as a kickoff for events we’re going to do in all six counties,” Moore said. “In the past, we put information out in all of the counties and invited people from the counties to participate.”

The run/walk event traditionally has been a major fundraiser for SOS; however, Moore said, by planning more events in other towns, SOS will be able to make those citizens more aware of the agency’s presence and services in those communities and give them an opportunity to learn more about it and perhaps become involved.

“We want to make people aware of the services we provide outside of Lyon County,” she said. “A lot of it is just getting the word out. It gives people an opportunity to come out and support ending violence in the communities.”

Volunteers will be needed to work the events as well as participate in them.

“This is a way that people who may not have a lot of time but want to get involved can do that,” Moore said. “If you live in Eureka, driving in (to Emporia) to do a 1-hour run may not be something that you can do. But if we have events in Eureka and in Madison and those areas, then we’re going to really reach out to more people and get more people involved.”

The run/walk, intended to promote fundraising as well as awareness, will support the SOS mission of ending sexual and domestic violence, abuse and neglect through service, education and advocacy, she said.
