Weather can make or break an event like the annual Artist Walk. On Saturday, the weather couldn’t have been better, and patrons took in sunshine along with some of the region’s finest artwork.
Painting, sketching, photography, blown glass, music and clay all were on display at the fifth annual walk, with artists both displaying and selling their work on Commercial Street.
A directory of what art shows were available on each block assisted walkers as they browsed through such display features as Audrea Atland’s photography show at Diamonds by Design, the late Richard Stauffer’s blown glass work at Town Crier Bookstore and Larry Matson’s clay pieces at Madelynn’s.
Terri Hensley, who routinely attends the annual art show with her daughter, Tiara, said she comes to the show on the lookout for unique pieces.
“(I’ll) look for awhile, and then if I decide I want something, I’ll come back,” she said. “Usually, I go through and look first, and then I come back and buy. Easier that way — I don’t have to carry everything. And hopefully it’s still there when I come back.”
The show had something for people of all ages. The Emporia Arts Council’s Artmobile was parked at Seventh and Commercial Streets, with a table set up in front of it allowing children, or anyone, to make their own Mardi Gras-style mask.
Jane McCoy brought her daughter Alee, a freshman at Emporia High School, to the show for the third time. Jane said she wanted to expose Alee, who’s interested in a career in art, to all types of media.
“I’m only a freshman, so I’ve been in jewelry and metals and really like that,” Alee said. “But I want to try to do everything so I know exactly what I am into. But before high school, I was really into drawing.”
“We want to see all of it,” Jane McCoy said. “I mean, any creativity, we like that. But personally, I like jewelry, and my dad’s a woodworker ... We kind of like to support all of it.”
Emporia Main Street and the Arts Council team each year to put on the annual walk.
