In one trip to California, Jonel Rossbach shattered two school records back home.
Less than 48 hours after setting Emporia State’s best mark in the 10,000-meter run, the senior doubled her accomplishment, setting a new school record in the 5,000-meter run at the VS Athletics Beach Invitational on Saturday in Long Beach, Calif.
Rossbach ran a 16:56.21 to win the event. Her time broke the previous school record of Susan Stine, who ran a 17:10.49 at the 1986 NAIA Championships.
Rossbach is one of only four Division-II women’s runners this season to finish the 5,000-meter run in less than 17 minutes.
Jaclyn Sill, the only other ESU athlete to compete in California, added a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter run (56.82 seconds).
The ESU jumpers were the highlight of Saturday’s competition at the Kansas Relays, as Dustin Andrews, Alex Pyle and Craig Saalfeld all provisionally qualified in the high jump.
All three cleared the same height of 6 feet, 8 3/4 inches, with Andrews taking sixth, Pyle placing eighth and Saalfeld coming in 10th.
ESU’s Larry Beamon, Josh Schuler, Travis Lee and Kenton Lonberger had ESU’s only other top-10 showing, finishing fourth in the 4x100-meter relay (41.87 seconds).
