LAWRENCE — The second day of the Kansas Relays was much less filled for the Emporia High track and field squad.
EHS athletes were only in three events on Saturday, with Jacob Davies and Michaela Reynolds competing in the 1,600-meter run along with the 4x800 relay team of Davies, Asher Delmott, Tyler Tilton and Tyler Anliker.
The best finish of the three came from the 4x800 squad, which finished 11th in a time of 8 minutes, 37.15 seconds. Kickapoo Nation High School won the event in a time of 8:14.97.
Reynolds followed a disappointing — by her standards — showing in the 3,200-meter on Friday with a 15th-place finish in the 1,600, though some scoreboard confusion made it unclear as to just how good of a race Reynolds actually had.
After the 1,600 was completed, Reynolds said she felt much better physically after feeling worn down in her 3,200 the day before, and it appeared her time would reflect how she felt, as the scoreboard flashed that she had run a 2-second P.R. in a time of 5:14.
However, that time turned out to be incorrect. Reynolds actually finished the race in a time of 5:19.40.
Even so, Reynolds said she still felt she had a strong race.
“I was a little surprised that I was able to run well for myself, not just place-wise,” Reynolds said. “I just felt better today.”
Davies was the final EHS entrant in the Relays, as he came in 20th in the 1,600 in a time of 4:32.07. Davies entered the race with the top time in the state of Kansas at 4:26, but five other Kansas runners eclipsed his previous mark.
Scott Gillespie of Shawnee Mission South, who finished second, now has the state’s fastest mark in the event at 4:19.92.
