Gazette wins awards in state press competition

JUNCTION CITY — The Emporia Gazette earned five first-place awards during the Kansas Press Association’s Awards of Excellence on Saturday. The Gazette also picked up seven second-place awards, one third-place and two honorable mentions.
First place Gazette winners included:
- Joey Berlin — Government/Political Story for “The flip side.”
- Jesse Newell — Sports Story for “Reason to smile” and Sports Column Writing.
The Gazette also took first place in Special Section for its 2007 Profile six-part series on Emporia’s sesquicentennial year, Design and Layout and Best Newspaper Web site.
Receiving second-place awards were Scott Rochat for Feature Story and Education Story, Berlin for Local Business Story and Government/Political Story, Michael Ashford for Youth Story and Sports Feature Story and The Gazette for Best Front Page and News and Writing.
The Gazette received third place for Best Use of Photos.
Receiving honorable mentions were Carly Pearson for Sports Photo and Berlin for Youth Story.
