Saturday, April 19, 2008

The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in Cottonwood Falls will celebrate Junior Ranger Day from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. April 26. Children of all ages may visit the preserve from 9 a.m. to noon to complete a new Junior Ranger booklet and Leave No Trace Scavenger Hunt. Upon completion of activities, children will be awarded a Junior Ranger badge, patch and certificate. A special awards ceremony will be at 10:30 a.m. in the barn.

In the afternoon, the National Park Service, The Nature Conservancy and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks will sponsor a kids’ fishing clinic. The clinic is designed to introduce kids to fishing in Kansas. The event is scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. April 26 and targeted for kids 15 and under.

The Kansas Park Trust and Strong City Grocery will provide free sack lunches before the clinic from noon to 1 p.m. to the first 75 participants. Representatives from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks will teach casting, knot tying, fish identification and safety. Poles and bait will be provided at the clinic. Prizes and gifts will be given.
