Galamba is sold
Nucor Corp. announced in a news release last week that its wholly owned subsidiary, The David J. Joseph Co., has completed the acquisition of substantially all of the assets of Kansas City, Mo.-based Galamba Metals Group.
Galamba, founded in 1977, operates a total of 16 full-service scrap processing facilities in Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas, including the scrap yard at 302 Graham St. in Emporia.
At all locations, Galamba employs a total of 385 people and processes over 500,000 tons of scrap metal annually. The new owner will operate the Galamba Metals Group under the Advantage Metals Recycling name. Galamba’s current employees and management team will remain with Advantage Metals Recycling.
This acquisition represents another step in Nucor’s previously announced plan to utilize David J. Joseph as a platform for continued growth in the scrap processing industry. Nucor is the largest purchaser of iron and steel scrap in North America, with total scrap purchases of 22.8 million tons in 2007.
Nucor and affiliates are manufacturers of steel products, with operating facilities primarily in the United States and Canada. Products produced include: carbon and alloy steel — in bars, beams, sheet and plate; steel joists and joist girders; steel deck; fabricated concrete reinforcing steel; cold finished steel; steel fasteners; metal building systems; light gauge steel framing; steel grating and expanded metal; and wire and wire mesh.
Digital theaters
Sonic Equipment Co. plans a free informational presentation on digital cinema at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Sterling Six Cinema, 1802 East St., Iola. Lunch will be provided. The presentation is intended for movie theatre owners, exhibitors and industry personnel not currently aligned with a provider and all those interested in obtaining digital cinema.

Attendees will get to see actual equipment in use and will experience Digital Content, including 3D content.
In a news release, Michael Covey, digital cinema manager for Sonic Equipment, said the presentation is intended to answer many questions for potential customers of digital cinema.
“There are a lot of questions right now about digital cinema. Sonic has done extensive research into d-cinema and has established relationships with providers that will allow us to answer many of those questions for exhibitors,” Covey said.
