Another race, another school record for Emporia State runner Jonel Rossbach.
The senior added to her laundry list of accomplishments at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., on Thursday, as she ran a 35:24.81 in the 10,000-meter run, which was ESU’s best time ever in the event.
Rossbach broke the previous mark by more than a minute, topping Trudy Searcy’s 1987 record of 36:24.85.
The senior had never run a 10K before in track and field.
“Jonel accomplished many goals she set for herself in this race — a new school record, an automatic NCAA qualifying mark and a solid, competitive race,” ESU track and field coach David Harris said.
The time earned Rossbach fourth place at the meet. It also is the best time in Division II this year.
Rossbach now is ranked in the top five at ESU in the outdoors 800-meter run, 1,500-meter run, 3,000-meter run, 5,000-meter run and 10,000-meter run.
“We will consider after this weekend whether this race will be in her national plans,” Harris said. “No decision has to be made until later in May, but coming out here and running in a great race ... will allow us to now think about a possible 10K-5K double at Nationals.”
