Emporia State University has awarded Graduate Teaching Assistant University Awards for Excellent Teaching to Tyler Miller and Laura Myers. Miller, a student from Yankton, S.D., was nominated by Brian Schrader, associate professor of psychology and special education. Myers, a student from Goddard, was nominated by Rachelle Smith, associate professor of English. The awards were established by the ESU Graduate Council in 2005.
Nominees were required to submit a portfolio supporting their teaching excellence. Portfolios included a one-page statement of teaching philosophy, student evaluations, faculty evaluations, sample lesson plans and any other materials that demonstrated excellence in teaching. A faculty committee selected the award recipients.
Miller is working on his master’s degree in psychology with a concentration in general psychology. Myers is working on her master’s degree in English. Both students were honored April 10 at ESU’s 2008 Research and Creativity Forum and received $250 cash awards.
