Tech College to offer Multimedia Program

The Flint Hills Technical College board of trustees approved the creation of a new program that college President Dean Hollenbeck thinks will drive up enrollment.

The board OK’d the new multimedia technology program at its monthly meeting on Monday. If approved by the Kansas Board of Regents this summer, the program will teach students skills in such areas as 2-D and 3-D design animation, video and audio technology and computer-generated graphics.

“And all that stuff’s used in advertising, public relations, developing programs, manufacturing, those types of things,” Hollenbeck said. “... So we’re really excited about that, and you know something else — the entertainment industry, people that have the multimedia-type training, this is really good for them. Because you take major companies such as Disney and Pixar and some of those — the kind of people that they hire are all the multimedia professionals.”

Hollenbeck said the board was going to try to start the new program in the fall, but if there are any glitches or other issues the board of regents wants the college to work out with the program, it could begin next spring.

But he said that even if it gets pushed back, the board of regents’ approval would allow multimedia technology students to start with their general education requirements this fall.

“We’ve already got lots of requests and we already have several students that are calling and we have ’em on our list,” he said. “I think we’ve probably got about a dozen or so already that have just heard that we’re working on it and are interested and want to be part of the program.”

Also at Monday’s meeting, the board discussed graduation, which is slated for May 17, and honored Aldo Sandoval, the recent winner of the Best Teen Chef in America contest. Sandoval won a $10,000 scholarship to the Art Institutes Culinary Arts School at the Best Teen Chef competition in Dallas last weekend.

Congratulations to Aldo Sandoval for taking first place in the Dallas competition. Now he will go to Las Vegas for further competition and must miss his high school graduation, but that's okay, Aldo, they'll mail your diploma anyway. This competition is more important to your future. Good luck in Las Vegas!
