Spartan boys 2nd, girls 4th at Manhattan invite

The Emporia High boys track and field squad won six titles on the way to a second-place team finish on Monday at the Manhattan Invitational, while the EHS girls garnered two event wins on the way to a fourth-place finish.
The victories for the EHS boys began in the field events, where Brandon Childs won the high jump and the long jump titles while Caydrick Bloomquist came away with the pole vault title.
Childs cleared 6 feet, 2 inches in the high jump and leaped to a distance of 21-1 3/4 in the long jump on his way to winning each event, while Bloomquist vaulted 13 feet to take the pole vault. Also placing for EHS in the pole vault was Ryan Dorsey, who came in sixth (10-6), while Andrew Heerman was fifth in the long jump (19-9 1/2).
Jacob Davies and Asher Delmott each won their respective specialty races, as Davies won the 800-meter run while Delmott captured victory in the 3,200-meter run.
Davies, the defending Class 5A State champion in the 800, won the race in a time of 1:55.76. Delmott ran the 3,200 in a time of 10:05.61, and Andrew Wayman was fourth in the event in a time of 10:20.89.
The 4x400-meter relay squad of Tyler Tilton, Davies, Taylor Euler and Mark Kolmer gave the EHS boys their final event victory of the day, coming across the finish line in a winning time of 3:30.
Both of the Emporia High girls’ titles came in the field events.
Samantha Kraft won the pole vault with a clearance of 10 feet. Teammate Corinne Edds was sixth (8 feet).
Freshman Sarah Kolmer won the triple jump, beating out her teammate, Angela Finch, by 7 1/4 inches with a best jump of 33-8 1/2.
Raelynn Pearson turned in a pair of top-3 finishes in the field events for the EHS girls, placing second in the discus and third in the shot put. Pearson’s best throw in the discus was 120-0 1/2, which was a personal-best distance, while her best toss in the shot was 35-6.
Mark Kolmer placed second in the javelin with a throw of 179-1, and Tyler Anliker and Andrew Heerman each turned in a pair of third-place finishes, as Anliker ran the 1,600 in a time of 4:40.38 while Heermann jumped 40-8 3/4 in the triple jump.
Michaela Reynolds came in third in the girls 1,600 in a time of 5:27.55, while Jenna Stanbrough in the 800 (2:27.49) and Rhani Henry in the 100 hurdles (16.98) each placed fifth in their respective events.
Rounding out the top placers for EHS were: Henry, sixth in the 300 hurdles (52.40); Kraft, sixth in the long jump (15-8 1/2); Euler, seventh in the 300 hurdles (43.50); and the girls 4x400 relay team (4:30) of Stanbrough, Taylor Elbe, Victoria Sims and Angela Finch.
The EHS track and field team is back in action on Friday and Saturday, as selected members of the squad will compete at the Kansas Relays in Lawrence.
