The Northern Heights girls track and field squad dominated its home invitational on Monday, outscoring the second-place team by 181 points on the way to the Travis Sheeley Track Meet team title.
In all, the Heights girls collected 233 points to distance themselves from second-place Council Grove, which scored 52 points. The Heights girls had 11 event winners out of a possible 17.
The boys team standings were a bit closer, as Osage City took the team title with 167 points over the Northern Heights boys (123).
For the Heights girls, it all started with the three-title day from field star Jacquelyne Leffler. The Kansas State signee won the shot put, the discus and the javelin in dominating fashion.
Her mark of 43 feet, 2 1/2 inches in the shot put her more than 14 feet better than her teammate, Leann Baird. Leffler’s discus toss of 147-9 was more than 50 feet better than Baird, while her javelin distance of 115-1 was 12 feet better than the runner-up.
Kaylee Eklund also turned in a multiple-title day, as she won the 100-meter dash in a time of 13.42 seconds and then took the long jump title with a jump of 16-2 1/2. Eklund also placed second in the high jump (4-6).
Annie Adams won the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 19.34 seconds, Danielle Dreier won the high jump with a leap of 4-8 and Amy Lee won the 800-meter run in a time of 2 minutes, 45.2 seconds to round out the individual winners for the Northern Heights girls.
The Heights girls swept the relays, however, winning the 4x100 (55.75 seconds), the 4x800 (11:44.60) and the 4x400 (5:07.87).
Chase County’s Julie Dorneker swept the long-distance events to round out the area event winners on the girls side, taking the 1,600-meter run title (5:44.80) and the 3,200 title (12:37.20). The Chase County girls finished fourth in the six-team field with 43 points.
As for the Northern Heights boys, they came away with four event titles.
Field athletes David Hanks and Joel Young each finished with a first-place and a second-place showing on the day, as Hanks won the discus with a throw of 136-1 and took second in the shot put (48-4 1/2), while Young won the javelin title with a throw of 157-1 and placed second in the discus (125-1).
Northern Heights’ other two event victories came in the relays, as the 4x400 team won in a time of 3:54.42 while the 4x800 team won in a time of 8:49.50.
Heights’ Pete Symmonds was the top area finisher in both the 800 and 1,600, placing second in the 800 (2:17.40) and fourth in the 1,600 (5:05.30).
Chase County’s Alec Wold picked up a pair of runner-up finishes, as he took second in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes in times of 11.62 seconds and 23.60 seconds, respectively. Aaron Wold placed second in the high jump, clearing 5-10.
Chase County’s boys placed fifth as a team with 47 points.
Other notable finishers for Northern Heights on the boys side were: Ryan Swanson, second in the 400-meter run (57.65 seconds); Chris Seematter, third in the 300-meter hurdles (46.72); and Jon Lowder, fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (23.04).
