EHS diver Schmitz earns trip to State

Tuesday, April 15, 2008

Emporia High junior diver Carissa Schmitz earned a bid to the State meet Monday afternoon after she won the Manhattan Quad diving competition.

Schmitz, in her first year with the team, scored a 193.70 to top the field of five divers. Her score put her more than 13 points above the mark needed to qualify for State.

Schmitz earned one of the Emporia High girls swimming and diving team’s three titles on the day, as EHS finished third in the four-team invitational with 319 points. Hutchinson won the meet with 385 points, Manhattan was second with 376 and Hays was fourth with 184.

Hilary Larson turned in the only other individual victory for the EHS girls, as she took home the title in the 100 freestyle in a time of 59.52 seconds.

Larson also swam in all three relays, where she helped the 200 freestyle relay team capture Emporia’s third title of the day. Larson teamed with Caitlin McGuire, Whitney Starr and Summer Wilson to take first place in the event in a time of 1 minute, 51.15 seconds.

In the 200 medley relay, it was Larson, McGuire, Starr and Michelle Thompson who came in third (2:05.36), while in the 400 free relay, Emporia’s quartet of Larson, Starr, Wilson and Kathryn Scherich finished second (4:03.84).

Starr had an impressive day individually, as she took second in the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:07.94 and also placed third in the 50 freestyle by touching the wall in 28.32 seconds.

Cali Schelling dropped 6 seconds off her time in the 200 freestyle to pace EHS in the event, as she finished fourth in a time of 2:23.04.

Also faring well in the diving competition were Aubrey Armitage and Hayley Fry, as the two finished third and fourth, respectively.

Scherich provided the top finish in the 500 freestyle for the Lady Spartans with a fifth-place showing (6:25.04), while Taylor Mason, swimming in the event for the first time, came in ninth (6:43.32). Scherich also placed fourth in the 50 free (28.51 seconds).

Rounding out the top placers for EHS were Jennie Loucks in the 200 individual medley (sixth, 2:52.86) and the 100 breaststroke (seventh, 1:25.69) and Jalen Hollenbeck in the 100 backstroke (sixth, 1:18.50).

EHS is back in action on Saturday when it travels to the Wichita Trinity Invitational.
