Chef to nationals
Aldo Sandoval took his hopes and his culinary skills to Dallas this weekend and came home as the winner of the Best Teen Chef of America 2008 competition.
Aldo’s instructor, Marie Malone, said the win made the young man eligible to go to Las Vegas on May 18 for a national competition.
In Dallas, Aldo won a plaque, a gold medal, and a $10,000 tuition scholarship to the Art Institutes Culinary Arts School. The Dallas contest was sponsored by the school and by the cable television Food Network.
“And we’re going after $50,000 in Las Vegas,” Malone said this morning. “I am proud of him.”
Sandoval had been chosen to compete in Dallas after an extensive application process that included submitting an original recipe.
Police officers honored
Three Emporia police officers will receive awards for valor during the Joint Kansas Law Enforcement Conference on May 23 in Wichita. Two Coffey County officers also will receive awards.
The Kansas Association of Chiefs of Police will present Silver Awards to Todd Ayer, David S. Holmes and Lt. Larry Adams for their roles in saving a child who had fallen through the ice at Peter Pan Lake.
The men were honored earlier for their valor by the Emporia City Commission.
