Emporia State baseball sweeps Southern, sets MIAA record

Monday, April 14, 2008

The Emporia State baseball team’s winning streak is now one for the MIAA record books.

The No. 5 Hornets completed a four-game sweep of Missouri Southern on Sunday, taking a 15-2 victory to win their 29th consecutive game.

ESU (36-3, 22-0 MIAA) broke the conference record on Saturday with its 28th straight win, a 10-2 triumph over Southern. The Hornets toppled Central Missouri’s 12-year-old record of 27 consecutive wins.

None of the weekend games ended up being competitive.

ESU outscored Southern 37-5 in the final three games of the series, ending the stretch with Sunday’s 15-2 run-rule victory.

After two quick outs, the Hornets had their next seven batters reach base safely in a four-run first.

Ryan Anthony shut down the Southern bats, allowing two runs in five innings.

Meanwhile, ESU added three in the fourth and six in the fifth to take a commanding 14-2 lead.

Kevin Wempe led the offense, going 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Keith Hernandez added a 3-for-5 performance with three RBI, while Andy Anderson also had three hits.

Eric Shortell contributed three hits and also did damage on the basepaths, stealing four bases to bring his season total up to 25.

About the only bad news for ESU was that Brian Majors had his 29-game hit streak snapped after going 0-for-6.

The Hornets were just as dominant Saturday.

In Game One’s 12-1 victory, Tyler Applehans allowed one run in a complete-game effort. He also struck out seven and walked two.

Leadoff hitter Conner Crumbliss led a 15-hit attack, going 4-for-5 with a pair of solo home runs. Emporia High graduate Anthony Markowitz also added his first homer of the year.

In the second game, ESU fell behind 1-0 before getting four in the third and five in the fifth to take control.

Richard Timbrook improved to 6-0, giving up just one run in his six innings.

Majors went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Hernandez added three RBI.

ESU will travel to face Pittsburg State in a makeup doubleheader on Wednesday.
