History within reach: Hornet baseball takes 9-1 win over Southern

The Emporia State baseball team moved to the verge of MIAA history with its 9-1 victory over Missouri Southern on Friday in Joplin, Mo.
The Hornets have now won 26 straight games and are just one victory away from tying the conference record for consecutive wins.
ESU started its bats in the second inning, scoring four runs to take a 4-0 lead.
Conner Crumbliss contributed a two-out, two-RBI double in the frame, and Brian Majors followed with a two-run home to right center.
The Hornets (33-3, 19-0 MIAA) scored a single run in the third before adding two more in the sixth on a two-run single from Eric Shortell.
Brock Nehls made the lead stand, allowing just one run in eight innings. He struck out seven and walked two.
Kellen Mitts worked around two hits to pitch a scoreless ninth.
Majors led ESU’s offense, going 3-for-5 and extending his hitting streak to 27 games.
Kellen Lane, Kevin Wempe and Crumbliss each added two hits.
Southern (12-21, 10-9 MIAA) committed three errors and allowed six unearned runs.
The two teams will continue the series today, starting a doubleheader at 1 p.m. in Joplin.
