The rains almost held off long enough for the Emporia High boys tennis team to get in a full day of play at the Seaman Invitational on Wednesday night in Topeka.
But EHS came about as close as it could get to getting all its matches in the books.
Emporia was able to finish all but one match, as Sergio Segura and Mark DeDonder were called off the court during the last match of the tournament — the first-place match at the No. 1 doubles position.
But while Segura and DeDonder were unable to finish off their day, it still proved to be a productive outing for the pair, as they won their other two matches earlier in the day to set up their attempt at first place.
Segura and DeDonder defeated Nicholas Mourlam and Eduardo Munoz of Bishop Miege, 6-2, before blanking a team from Highland Park, 6-0, to get to the title match against Hayden’s Zack Hanks and J.T. Peterson — a match that would be completed.
However, because Segura and DeDonder did not finish their last match, that left the EHS doubles teams with an undefeated record for the tournament, as the No. 2 doubles team of Brandon Heavener and Jonathan Roman — playing together for the first time this season — placed first with a 3-0 record.
The duo beat a team from Hayden, 6-2, and a team from Junction City, 6-0, before shutting out a pair from Shawnee Heights, 8-0, to take the first-place finish.
“We’re still trying to get some continuity from our doubles teams, and I though both teams played well,” EHS coach Matt Irby said. “Mark and Sergio did well, and were still working on some things with them. Brandon and Jonathan looked good playing together for the first time.”
In singles action, David Nasrazadani placed third with a 2-1 record at the No. 2 singles spot. Nasrazadani defeated Kane Lesperance of Hayden, 6-1, before falling to Seaman’s Tyler Nelson, 6-1, putting Nasrazadani in the third-place match.
There, Nasrazadani took down Shawnee Heights’ Brandon Nunmaker, 6-3, to take third place.
At the No. 1 singles position, Chris Reimer also finished with a 2-1 record, but a first-round loss to an opponent from Bishop Miege put Reimer in comeback mode the rest of the way.
