Fry, Larson, McGuire lead EHS at BVNW

The Emporia High girls swimming and diving team came away with a pair of double-event winners and a State qualifier at the Blue Valley Northwest Invitational on Tuesday.

Hilary Larson and Caitlin McGuire each picked up two victories in the swimming events while diver Hayley Fry earned a State-qualifying score in the six-dive competition.

Fry led a strong showing for the EHS divers, as she placed third overall with a score of 185.50, less than two points out of second place. Fry was followed by Carissa Schmitz in fourth (174.45) and Aubrey Armitage in fifth (150.10).

As for the swimming events, the Lady Spartans’ strong day was paced by Larson and McGuire.

Larson won the 200 freestyle in a time of 2 minutes, 7.94 seconds and then followed that with a victory in the 50 backstroke in a time of 1:10.71.

EHS went 1-2-3 in the 200 free, as Summer Wilson (2:26.48) and Jade Gaskill (2:28.78) finished second and third, respectively.

As for McGuire, she placed first in the 50 freestyle in a time of 26.71 seconds and also won the 100 freestyle in a time of 1:00.67.

Two other EHS swimmers picked up top-five finishes in the 100 free, as Kathryn Scherich was fourth (1:03.38) and Michelle Thompson was fifth (1:05.65). Scherich also placed seventh (28.40) in the 50 free.

Whitney Starr turned in a strong day, as she placed second in the 100 butterfly (1:07.43) and third in the 200 individual medley (2:33.40).

Gaskill placed fourth (6:58.22) in the 500 freestyle and Jennie Loucks came in fourth (1:23.36) in the 100 breaststroke to round out the top individual finishes for EHS.

Emporia also finished second in all three relay events.

Jalen Hollenbeck, McGuire, Starr and Scherich teamed up in the 200 medley relay, finishing in a time of 2:10.04, less than 4 seconds behind a team from Blue Valley.

In the 200 freestyle relay, the quartet of Loucks, Cali Schelling, Thompson and Wilson also finished less than 4 seconds off the winning pace of a team from Blue Valley, as the EHS squad touched the wall in 1:59.93.

In the final event of the day — the 400 free relay — Larson, Starr, Scherich and McGuire finished in a time of 4:03.04, just a half-second out of first place.

Team results were not available as of press time.

The next action for EHS will be on Monday when the team travels to the Manhattan Invitational.
