Road Closing
Road L, five miles south of Allen, will be closed for about 45 working days, according to information from the Lyon County Road and Bridge Department.
Military academies
Congressman Jerry Moran announced that he is accepting applications for nominations to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md., the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colo., and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y.
Those selected will enter the academies in June 2009.
Applicants must be legal Kansas residents at least 17 years old. Applications can be made through Moran’s office, as well as through the offices of U.S. Sens. Sam Brownback and Pat Roberts.
The application deadline is Sept. 15, 2008, through Moran’s office. Requests for applications may be sent to Congressman Jerry Moran, Attn: Service Academy Selection, P.O. Box 1128, Hutchinson, KS 67504-1128.

The Power Tool Drags
The Fourth Semi-Annual Emporia State University Power Tool Drag Races Competition will be held at noon on April 19 in the parking lot of the Student Recreation Center on the north end of the ESU campus. The track should be set up at about 10 a.m for testing entries, a news release stated.
Sponsors are the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics and the Department of Physical Science in association with the ESU student chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery.
