The Mental Health Center of East Central Kansas has received a grant from the state to sponsor a statewide training workshop on interventions for high-functioning autism/Asperger syndrome children.
Wes Jones, the clinical director for mental health at the Mental Health Center, said this morning that he wrote the grant, which will allow all 29 mental health centers in the state to send two staff members each to the training on April 15 and April 16. Jones, who has been at the Mental Health Center for 31 years, said the grant is funded by the state of Kansas and is for educational training in relation to children.
Jones said this is the first time the training has been held in the state.
“The faculty that will be doing this will be coming from the University of North Carolina, Charlotte,” he said.
The training staff is Joyce Lum and Doug DeMeyer, both of the TEACCH Center in Charlotte. The TEACCH Center is part of North Carolina’s statewide TEACCH program that serves children and adults with autism and their families.
The training will cover several topics, including features of autism and Asperger syndrome, cognitive and learning differences, use and effectiveness of visual strategies and recognizing the visual supports across settings.

Congratulations to the Mental Health Center and Wes Jones! This is wonderful news for the area and especially for families who will benefit from the results of the training.
