A week after an article that ran in the Emporia Gazette on the Essence page, 18 animals have been adopted at the Emporia Animal Shelter, said Peggy Derrick, shelter manager. All but one animal pictured got adopted, she said. Several more calls have been received and supplies have been pouring in.
The article ran because of the high number of adult cats the shelter was housing. For more information on the shelter or on adoption, visit the shelter at 1216 Hatcher St. or call 340-6345.

That is AWESOME to hear. I met a few of those cats that were stuck in those small cages and I have no doubt they are feeling the freedom. Way to Go Emporia.
Did anyone watch the Puppy Mills episode on Oprah yesterday? It was enough for me to make a spaying appointment. ASAP!
ADOPT from a shelter and stay away from Big Pet stores. Those pups most likely come from puppy mills.

Now if only the City/Animal Shelter could be convinced to spay/neuter ALL PETS adopted BEFORE they leave the animal shelter to stem the never ending flow of unwanted pets back into the shelter.
Research proves that all other factors remaining constant (adoption rate, etc...) that if all pets adopted from the shelter are spayed or neutered the euthanasia rate could be reduced as much as 70% within a five year period. GOOGLE Peter Marsh Spay/Neuter Model for New Hampshire. A program successfully implemented proving the statistics.

I'm happy to hear that so many animals, especially adults, were adopted. I don't like to hear of any animal being put down. Now, let's hope those new owners can honor the leash law.
The leash ordinance also includes cats, yet everyday I see several cats in my neighborhood roaming free, and not one has a collar or tag. They are attracted to the garden boxes in my vegetable garden because the soil is so soft. I am SICK of cleaning out cat feces.
My own cat, Thomas Justagato, comes from the animal shelter. I adopted him when he was an adult, and he has become a wonderful companion. He is neutered; he stays indoors; he uses his own very nice litter box that I keep clean. He is not out wandering the streets destroying other people's property.
It looks like I will have to call the animal police again. It gets old.

Who is the director of the Animal Shelter? I would to see a weekly chat with them someday. There are a lot of concerns and complaints within the community regarding the shelter.

Thats really a horrible remark. Drowning animals is inhumane. I'd rather they be put down at the shelter than like that.
And I do think that any article about pets and so many unwanted animals should be a reminder to spay or neuter. IT IS IMPORTANT. And yes every animal whether stray or just picked up running loose should have to be fixed before leaving the shelter. Its just good business and saves on costs and abandoned animals trying to find a home.

What else would you do with cats that invade your yard. Talk to the owners? They don't care if cats c@#p in your yard or they would keep them contained

Let's see, pay for spaying or neutering, add on the adoption fees, licenses etc at the shelter or from the Buck fund, or go to a pet store and buy a pet for 1/4 of those costs, or find free and readily available newborn pets in the area? Gee I wonder why they have trouble getting homes for unwanted pets considering the options.
