ESU’s Lonberger, Honeycutt take pair of titles

Kenton Lonberger’s teammates looked at him like he was crazy.
It was just minutes before the finals in the 100-meter dash, and the freshman had a special request: a hot dog.
“I needed something in my stomach,” the Emporia State freshman said. “A hot dog works magic, I guess.”
That sure seemed to be the case on Saturday at the State Farm ESU Relays.
Shortly after taking a few bites of the concession-stand goody, Lonberger easily outdistanced the field in the 100-meter dash, winning it in a time of 10.29 seconds.
“I can’t even comprehend it. That’s just so fast,” Lonberger said. “I never even ran close to that in high school.”
Lonberger — who hadn’t eaten breakfast because the ESU cafeteria was still closed when the meet started — later added a second championship in the 200-meter run (21.0 seconds).
The freshman had two of ESU’s six individual championships.
“It’s all the training we’re doing,” Lonberger said. “(Assistant) coach John David (Harris) is a great coach, and he just keeps us focused, keeps us motivated.
“It’s no mystery. Just work hard, and you’ll do well.”
Fellow ESU freshman Josh Honeycutt also was able to take titles in two events.
Honeycutt said he was fortunate to even be competing on Saturday.
“To be honest, I’m probably not supposed to tell Coach this, but I didn’t think I was supposed to jump until 11:30,” Honeycutt said.
When it rolled around to 10:45, Honeycutt received a call from teammate Doug Marshall telling him that the long jump was starting quickly and that he’d better get to the stadium.
The freshman arrived just in time.
“I had to focus real quick. I didn’t even get my long jump mark down. I had to guess,” Honeycutt said. “Today’s just been a crazy day.”
It ended up being a good day as well.
Honeycutt won both the long jump (23 feet, 10 inches) and triple jump (48 feet, 11.5 inches), setting a personal record in both events.
His long jump was a personal-best by almost a foot and a half.
“I guess it was just a spur-of-the-moment thing,” Honeycutt said. “I had an adrenaline rush, I guess.”
The only women’s championship came from Jaclyn Sill, who coasted to a victory in the 400-meter run (56.40 seconds).
The senior won despite taking some time off earlier in the week to tend to some injuries.
After competing in the 600-meter run all indoor season, Sill said it was nice to get back to her preferred event.
“It’s so much easier mentally,” Sill said. “It’s just so much nicer because you run one lap and you’re done.”
What might have been most strange for Sill was running an outdoor meet without sidekick Kara Euler.
The two ran together two straight years at ESU before Euler’s graduation.
“It’s kind of like not having my left leg,” Sill said. “Kara and I still get together all the time, and she’s still one of my biggest supporters.”
Sill received a good-luck present from Euler before the meet and also could hear her yelling from the bleachers during the final straightaway of the 400.
“It’s different,” Sill said, “but she’s still with me.”
Skyler Delmott had the other championship, winning the 5,000-meter run in a time of 15:31.50.
