Shopping Emporia

Saturday, April 5, 2008

WE HAVE ALL heard the advertising slogan “Shop Emporia First.” Sometimes it takes a lot of perseverance to shop in Emporia for specialized items.

I am a disabled individual who uses a motorized wheelchair; my chair uses two 12-volt deep cycle batteries for operation. In late February, my batteries needed replacement. I called Home Health Care Center and Newman Medical Equipment to inquire about purchasing the batteries from them. Newman Medical equipment told me that they no longer repair wheelchairs and scooters. Home Health Care Center said they had none. I then called the Wichita company, National Seating, where I purchased the chair. They would bring me two batteries and install them at a cost of $607.50.

I spoke to several friends who recommended I contact Flint Hills Batteries. The owner, Dennis, was able to get me two batteries and he also installed them for a total of $256.32. I know there are several people who use motorized wheelchairs and scooters. When you need to replace your batteries, I recommend you contact Dennis at Flint Hills Batteries.

In the meantime, maybe Newman Medical Equipment and Home Health Care Center need to evaluate their policy to not repair wheelchairs and scooters. There is a market available if they want to take care of it.

I appreciate you sharing this story. With so many Emporia businesses being run like a hobby and unwilling to provide the basics of quality, selection, price and service, it is good to hear when one is found that does.

This is exactly what I am talking about in the other story about the Buxton Review. We have no one on one service here in Emporia. You are just a number and a transaction to most of these places. Treat people like PEOPLE.
I am glad to hear that we do have some who help out and try to do business. Its usually the "mom and pops' that give that service. Kudos to you Dennis and Flint Hills Battery.

Kestreb....That is so clear to me? How can retail sales grow without more population? Any retailer, over time, will hack off a few customers just as some customers are not worth having for some retailers
