Madison
The Madison News reported that the newspaper was chosen as Business of the Year by the Madison Area Chamber of Commerce for 2008. The award was presented to Jola Casey, managing editor of The Madison News, at the Chamber’s annual meeting.
Burlington
The Coffey County Republican reported that Coffey County will continue to offer a dust abatement program to rural county residents who want to participate. Coffey County commissioners approved continuing the program, which serves residents who live outside an incorporated area and within 300 feet of a rock road. The cost is $1 per linear foot for a minimum of 300 feet to a maximum of 700 feet. The county applies liquid magnesium chloride to a strip of rock in front of eligible homes to control dust.
Elmdale
The Chase County Leader-News reported that the Elmdale mayor is asking for county assistance to repair a dike at Elmdale.
Elmdale Mayor Ray McClellan told the Board of County Commissioners that a flood gate on the dike leaked during the last high water and the city doesn’t have the funds or equipment to repair it. McClellan estimated that the county could repair it in two days or less. After discussion, the board took no action on the item, saying it had spent most of its funds this year on water-plant repairs.
Strong City
The Chase County Leader-News reported that Swartz Motorsports, which has its business in Strong City, hopes to move to Cottonwood Falls.
Mike Swartz the Chase County Board of Commissioners that he would like to purchase the county’s old ambulance barn property in Cottonwood Falls. Swartz said his desire is to build a new home on the property and move his business there as well. The board took no action on the matter, however, commissioners said the property currently houses items that belong in the Chase County Courthouse, which is being renovated. Commissioners said they have other interest in the property and are unsure of what procedure they will take if they sell it.
Burlington
The Coffey County Republican reported that Brenda Cherry of Burlington, filed for Coffey County Treasurer. Cherry is a longtime Coffey County resident and a 20-year employee in the Coffey County Treasurer’s Office.
Strong City
The Chase County Leader News reported that Karin Murphy opened up a new business in Strong City, Capt’n Drinkwater’s. Murphy purchased the former Branding Iron in January and spent two and a half months renovating the building for her business.
