EHS soccer takes care of Wichita East, 2-0

Saturday, April 5, 2008

Call it round two, squared.

The Emporia High girls soccer team evened its season record at 3-3 with a 2-0 victory over Wichita East on Friday night at TRYSA in a rematch of both teams’ first game of the season.

Last week in the first round of the Titan Classic in Wichita, Emporia took a 1-0 victory over East.

Ashley Leihsing gave Emporia all the scoring it would need in the 15th minute, as she knocked a shot into the net off a pass from Jessica Decker after a free kick that put EHS ahead, 1-0.

Less than 2 minutes later, Rachelle VanGundy also found the net off a pass from Decker, this time off an in-bounds play from the left side, which capped the scoring for the rest of the game.

Though the scoring ran dry from then on, Emporia’s lead was hardly in jeopardy. The Lady Spartans connected for 12 shots on goal compared to just three for Wichita East, and EHS goalkeeper Melanie Nuessen recorded all three saves.

By the second half of Emporia’s third game in four days, EHS coach John Decker said his team simply looked too worn out to do much more scoring.

“Our legs ran out on us by the second half,” Decker said. “We were pretty tired in the second half after three games this week, but we really weren’t threatened that much either. We still controlled the game pretty well.”

Emporia’s next game is Tuesday at TRYSA against Manhattan.
