About 100 people, senior citizens and college athletes alike, danced the evening away Thursday in the Memorial Union Ballroom. The event was the second annual Senior Citizen Prom sponsored by the university’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee.
The dance was mostly for the seniors and the music was geared for their tastes. The theme this year was “Dancing With the Seniors.” The young athletes escorted the guests in as they arrived.
The ballroom was decorated with a red carpet in the entryway and a balloon arch to serve as a backdrop for prom photos.
The dance was free and open to all senior citizens.
When the dance was being planned, Carmen Leeds of the ESU athletics department said the students were taking the event seriously.
“The student athletes are going out and having dance lessons in preparation,” she said.
Leeds said the prom was started as a way to honor the senior citizens who give to their community all year long. “We want to give back to them,” she said.
