Fashion history
Carolyn Miller of Sedalia, Mo., will present “The History of Women’s Fashions” from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Emporia Presbyterian Church. The program displays a wide variety of clothing items from the late 1800s to the 1960s on dress forms and includes commentary about the progression of fashions and events that influenced changes in fashion trends, said the news release. A light luncheon will be served. The program is sponsored by the Flint Hills Chapter of the American Association of University Women. RSVPs are requested, but not required. Children’s theater
“The Little Mermaid” will be performed by the Missoula Children’s Theatre and local actors at 7 p.m. today and 2 p.m. Saturday. For more information, call 343-6473.
Historical society
The Lyon County Historical Society presents a “Night at the Museum” at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Lyon County Museum. The guest speaker will be Lowell May, who will talk about the prisoner of war camps in Kansas.
Student Exhibition
The annual Juried ESU Art Student Exhibition will be held from Monday through May 2 at the Norman R. Eppink Gallery at ESU.
The opening reception will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. Information: 341-5689.
During the month of April, ESU student works not selected by the jurors of the Annual Juried student exhibition will be on display in The Salon des Refuses exhibit at the Emporia Arts Council, 618 Mechanic St.

Concerts
A local band, “The Highlife,” will perform live at The Noose, starting about 8:30 p.m. on April 11. According to the press release, this is a four-piece group that “plays just about everything, from reggae to pop, rock to show tunes, jazz to rockabilly.” Come early, as seating is limited. There is no cover charge.
On April 18 at 7:30 p.m., “The Usual Suspects” will perform at The Noose. The band plays a “unique repertoire of 60s and 70s music, very laid-back and with very original arrangements,” said the press release. For more information, call The Noose at 343-8629 or e-mail: thenoose2008@gmail.com.
Crafters wanted
Arts and crafts people are invited to enter the Mall Magic Arts and Crafts Show to be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 26 and noon to 5 p.m. April 27 at the Flinthills Mall. Glass show
The ESU Glass Guild Blowout will be held April 12 at the Glass Studio on north Highland St., featuring Scott Darlington. The schedule includes hot glass demonstrations from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 to 5 p.m. There will be a barbecue/potluck from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and a glass auction at 7 p.m.
Opera
The ESU Department of Music will present the opera, “The Merry Widow,” at 7:30 p.m. April 18 and 19 in Albert Taylor Hall of Plumb Hall on the ESU campus. General admission is $5; students and senior citizens, $4. For more information, call 341-5431.
EAC show
“The Tweaksters,” sponsored by the Emporia Arts Council, will perform at 7 p.m. April 24 in Albert Taylor Hall. The Tweaksters are Regan Patno and Julia Snyder, two performing artists whose “quirky take on the world blends balletic feats, precision juggling, acrobatics and creative choreography with odd objects,” said the press release. F Lily Liu of Emporia has two knitted necklaces in Wearable Expressions, the sixth international juried wearable art at the Palos Verdes Art Center in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. The free exhibition continues through April 20. For more information, call (310) 541-2479.
F Two works by Andrew Roland of Emporia, a junior student at Washburn University in Topeka, will be among the works featured in the 2008 student art show from May 3 to July 13 at the WU Mulvane Art Museum. No admission is charged. Roland will show the porcelain, “Celadon Flower” and “Casualty of Ash,” a wood-fired porcelain.
