The Right Decision for a Pet

CHICAGO (AP) _ Oprah Winfrey plans to dedicate a show investigating abuses at puppy mills to her cocker spaniel, Sophie, who died last month from kidney failure.
"Sophie gave me 13 years of unconditional love. She was a true love in my life," Winfrey says on the broadcast scheduled to air Friday. (Advance remarks from the show were released Tuesday by Harpo Productions.)
The show features special correspondent Lisa Ling investigating puppy mills, which Ling calls "horrific" and "haunting."
Winfrey says the show is "for anybody anywhere who loves a dog, has ever loved a dog, or just cares about their basic right to humane treatment."
While Sophie was not a product of a puppy mill, and Winfrey's three current dogs were adopted from breeders, Winfrey says in the future she would look to adopt from an animal shelter.
"I would never, ever adopt another pet now without going to a shelter to do it. I am a changed woman after seeing this show," she says.

That is why you don't want to buy a puppy from a pet store. I'm pretty sure that is why the local petstore doesn't have puppies, the owner said he didn't have time to check out breeders. Add in those silly "designer dogs" which are mixed breeds with cute names like labradoodle. Please, we used to call those mutts and see them in a box on the corner for $5 or FREE. A pet is a huge committment of time and money. Anyone thinking of getting a dog should check out its home first.

"Breedin' for Greed"....... Puppymills exist here in Lyon county. Watch the Gazette and Shopper ads for awhile. You quickly figure out who's making a few bucks while good pets at the shelter are gassed for lack of homes. Backyard breeders know the local shelter is a great source for "new" breeding stock for only $80! Mandatory spay/neuter Emporia Shelter! No pet adopted without being sterilized! Please take the first step in the right direction!

puppy mills are horrible. try watching the three videos on; http://stoppuppymills.org/ ... its terrible. they are just mass produced dogs/inbred and even when they arent even 1 yet. they might sound like a good deal but you end up paying in the long run from genetic disease/disorders. vet bills, and even early loss of a pet. which is a horrbile thing to experience. If you think its too much to adopt then you probably couldnt afford to shelter and care for the dog.

ANYBODY even remotely thinking about BREEDING their dog just because they have a purebred should check www.petfinder.com. first. Type in your breed and immediately realize WHY no one should EVEN think about it! Thousands of dogs ALREADY born need homes. Why bring more into this world? Dogs have the capacity to love you the same no matter what their PEDIGREE !
Help STOP the pet over-population! If you hear of anybody wanting to have a litter of CATS or DOGS, please try to make them realize the suffering of all out there already born! Only humans can speak for the animals, yet they do all the hurting! Please report ANY pet abuse to the police dept. 342-1766. IT'S A CRIME!
