Write about staying healthy

HealthyKansas and the Sunflower State Games are joining together to encourage students in grades first through third and fourth through sixth to compete in a Healthy Essay Contest.

The students may submit essays about their favorite physical activity and why it keeps them healthy, according to a news release.

Secretary Roderick L. Bremby of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment will select a winner in each group. Winners will receive a Sunflower State Games Gold Medal, SSG T-shirt and a $100 savings bond, and will be invited to read their winning essays at the SSG Sponsor Recognition Dinner in July.

Santa Fe Trail Republican Women meeting

The Santa Fe Trail Republican Women of North Lyon County meet at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Allen Senior Center in Allen. Teresa Walters, executive director of Emporians for Drug Awareness, will be the speaker. Walters also represents the Regional Professional Center of the Flint Hills. Visitors are always welcome. EHS Art exhibit

The Emporia High School art department will have an exhibit from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the EHS Library. Visitors will see student artwork and music students will provide musical entertainment.
