Students travel through Germany

Saturday, September 29, 2007

Several Emporia High School students made a whirlwind trip of nine cities in Germany over the summer, from the Dachau concentration camp to fashion-conscious Berlin to the charm of Heidelberg.

They’re sure to appreciate Oktoberfest more this fall. The two-week festival in Munich is the largest public fair in the world.

“The German culture is more laid back,” said Naomi Gonzalez, a student in Sheria Willms’s German classes at EHS. “That’s what I liked. They work hard and play hard and when they work they produce quality things.”

Gonzalez and Willms, along with fellow EHS travelers Alex Carter and Samantha Baumann, recently recalled their trip, which started June 11 and concluded June 20. Three new EHS graduates also made the trip. They took lots of photos and enjoyed sharing them with a visitor.

More than anything, the trip whet their appetites for future travel to Germany.

Carter was especially impressed with the nation and is anxious to return.

“I’d like to go back,” he said. “The sooner the better.”

Willms is planning to take EHS students to Germany next summer, too.
